Hervey Bay Whale Watching Season 2010
August 1 - October 31
Over the last 20 years the earliest whale sighting in the Bay has been July 9th. By July 15th there is roughly a 50% chance of sighting whales, and historically from July 24th you are almost certain of seeing whales. All Hervey Bay whale watching operators guarantee sightings (or a free ticket for another cruise) from August 1st to October 31st, with plentiful whales in the Bay from the start of August.
WhaleSong Cruises is usually the first boat to launch for the season, and around July 10th will start Whale Search / Dolphin Watch Cruises (you will need to enquire closer to this date as to when these trips will officially start). These are 3/4 day trips until July 24th.
There are a great many whale watching boats in the fleet, with a number of new and technologically advanced boats launched in the last 2 years. The newer and faster boats are preferred as they have better designed and more stable decks and viewing platforms, more environmentally friendly engine systems, and being faster you get more time with the whales.
Our recommended operators for this season are: (based on boat, crew service, crew experience, quality of offering, reliability)
Whalesong Cruises : Brand new purpose built whale watching jet-cat being launched in July this year! Promises to be an exceptional boat. WhaleSong is licensed for 78 passengers but limits its whale watching numbers to 60 to ensure plenty of viewing space for all (average 30 - 50). Whalesong is the only 1/2 day boat with a full meal included in the ticket price (breakfast or lunch).
Spirit of Hervey Bay : Spirit launched a brand new purpose built boat in 2008, and it has proved to be a great boat. Spirit is the biggest boat in the fleet, with 3 levels of viewing platforms (inc a waterline viewing platform and underwater cameras and viewing windows). Licensed for 300 passengers it averages 100 per cruise. For those worried about sea-sickness or weather conditions, Spirit is the pick.
Blue Dolphin Marine Tours : Launching a brand new purpose built sailing catamaran this year in July! Pete has plenty of experience on the Bay, and is a retired Sea World dolphin trainer to boot. The new boat will be a lot faster, with motor-sailing speeds of above 11 knots allowing much more time with the whales. This is a full day trip with small group size (24).
Freedom : Our pick of the 3/4 day cruises. This is a 3/4 day trip and includes morning and afternoon tea and a buffet lunch. Freedom is a 58ft catamaran with 2 viewing levels, and was previously owned by documentary producer Ben Cropp. (45 passengers)
All Hervey Bay Whale Watching operators offer free transfers from your accommodation. We are agents for all the operators, so if you prefer to cruise with an operator not mentioned here, please ask.
